Use of MP3 files causes deep concern to record industry

The international music industry is deeply concerned about the fast growth of MPEG audio layer 3 (MP3) technology. The major international record companies are worried by the number of websites distributing both unauthorized and authorized MP3 files of sound recordings and by the growing number of portable MP3 playback machines being made available to consumers.

Two particular aspects of MP3 concern the majors. Firstly MP3 is a non-patented, freely available technology. The MP3 digital compression standard is part of the ISO standards for Motion Picture and Audio compression, and has been endorsed by the video and audio hardware manufacturers’ industries. MP3, which compresses audio into the smallest possible bandwidth in digital form by removing inaudible information, can achieve a compression ratio of up to 12:1 without perceivable loss in stereo sound quality.

Whereas a three to four minute-long CD audio track requires about 40Mb of disc storage capacity, an MP3 file of the same track would use just 3.75Mb of data. This greatly reduces the time it takes to download sound files.

Secondly, MP3 technology is very flexible. It can be used to compress music from CDs and make that music available on the Internet. An MP3 audio file can be downloaded from the Internet and stored on hard drive or CD-R, assuming a powerful enough computer, or transferred to a chip on one of the new portable MP3 players.

Moreover, using a computer CD-drive, music on a traditional CD can be encoded into MP3 and then transferred to an MP3 player and listened to with virtually no loss in sound quality.

Industry bodies, including the US and Japanese record industry trade associations, the RIAA and RIAJ respectively, have warned a number of websites that they are infringing copyright by storing and offering unauthorized MP3 files for download. RIAA and RIAJ are also examining the legality of portable MP3 playback devices.

However, despite the increase of MP3 anti-piracy activity, which has led to the closure of hundreds of sites offering unauthorized MP3 files over the last 12 months in the US, the number of such sites is still thought to be growing. The RIAA also runs a copyright education campaign aimed at college students, who are seen as primary users of MP3 technology.

Authorized provider and record company MP3. Com claims that major record companies regularly stop their artists from releasing material in MP3. None of the majors has so far released a recording, for sale or promotional purposes, in MP3 format.

Last month, MP3. Com launched a system, Digital Automatic Music (DAM), under which artists can market and sell their music as MP3 files and receive 50% of the proceeds. Signing up for DAM does not involve fees or administration costs and MP3. com will not claim ownership of the recordings.

The company says several dozen bands have signed up so far. MP3. Com is responsible for the marketing and distribution. The website claims that 2m visitors each month access its database of thousands of free downloadable tracks. There are also several non-MP3 music artist sites, from which music can be downloaded using software such as RealAudio or Liquid Audio.

Role Playing Games - What Are They All About?

A role-playing game (RPG) is a type of game where players assume the roles of imaginary characters in a scenario created by the game developer and vicariously experience the adventures of these characters.

In role-playing games players often team up to generate narratives. The play progresses according to a preset scheme of rules and strategy, within which players may invent liberally. Player options shape the course and conclusion of role-playing games.

Role-playing games are usually more gung-ho and casual fun than competitive. A role-playing game unites its participants into a single team that fights as a group. A role-playing game rarely has winners or losers. This makes role-playing games uniquely different from board games, card games, sports and other types of games. Role-playing games attract because they fire the players’ imagination.

There are many different types of role-playing games. The PC-based RPG-s of today aren’t an original genre; they are derived from board-based or real-life games that have been popular with children and even grown-ups for a long, long time. One such RPG might involve guests at a dinner party acting out suspects in a murder mystery, while another might involve players sitting around a bonfire and narrating parts of a story and rolling dice. Another RPG might consist of costumed participants recreating a medieval battle with padded armor and heavy weapons.

At their nucleus, role-playing games are a form of interactive and mutual storytelling. Simple forms of role-playing exist in traditional children’s games such as “cops and robbers,” “dogs and mailmen,” “cowboys and Indians,” and “playing house” or “doctor”.

The original form of role-playing game was the fantasy war game, inspired by brave knight and witchcraft lore and using minute figures and scale terrain grids to demonstrate action in a way similar to that of strategic war games.

Role-playing games have rules known usually as game mechanics. Almost all role-playing games require the participation of a game master (GM), who narrates the game session and acts as the moderator and rules arbitrator. The rest of the participants create and play inhabitants of the game setting, known as player characters (PCs). The player characters collectively are known as a “party”.

Internet role-playing games range from graphical games such as EverQuest to simple text based games. They can also be divided into genres by the imaginary locale where they take place. Fantasy RPGs draw their inspiration from fantasy literature, such as the works of J. R. R. Tolkien. The best games in this field are Dungeons & Dragons, Exalted, Palladium Fantasy, RuneQuest, Legend of the Five Rings etc.

Science fiction RPGs are inspired by science fiction literature. The setting is generally in the future. The popular games are Rifts, Traveller, Cyberpunk 2020, Paranoia, Shadowrun and so forth.

Horror RPGs are inspired by horror literature. Horror RPGs can be divided into two groups. The first is inspired by the works of H. P. Lovecraft, focusing on humanity’s fight against malevolent, extra-dimensional entities. The second centres around playing supernatural creatures, such as vampires, changelings, and werewolves. The top titles are Call of Cthulhu, Kult, World of Darkness Changeling: The Dreaming, Vampire: The Masquerade, Vampire: The Requiem, Werewolf: The Apocalypse, Werewolf: The Forsaken, Hunter: The Reckoning, Orpheus, and Mage: The Ascension.

Historical RPGs, as you can probably imagine, take place in the past. Settings that have been explored in role-playing games include Pendragon (based on Arthurian legends), Sengoku (about Japanese warring states), Recon (regarding the Vietnam War), Fantasy Imperium (takes place in historical Europe).

Superhero role-playing games are inspired by superhero comic books and graphic novels. The major games are Champions, DC Heroes, Marvel Super Heroes, Mutants and Masterminds.

When trying to decide which next-generation gaming console will give you the most bang for your bucks, remember that marketing folks will often use tricky language to mislead and impress you.

For example, Microsoft had announced that the Xbox 360 could do 9 billion dot product operations per second. Sony replied by announcing that the PlayStation 3 was capable of 51 billion dot product operations per second. That was a staggering difference! Surely Microsoft wasn’t planning to place such an underpowered little toy as a rival to Sony’s flagship product in the console market?

The real story is, the Sony marketing folks added CPU and GPU powers together to arrive at that 51-billion number, while Microsoft was giving only the CPU performance. Taking also the GPU performance into account, the Xbox 360 does a good 33.6 billion dot product operations per second.

That still leaves the PS3 about 50% stronger than its nearest competitor. And processor-wise, too, it probably beats the MS product by some margin – being based on a 7-unit, 3.2 GHz PowerPC processor, as opposed to the Xbox CPU which can handle no more than 6 threads at a time.

However, when discussing sheer graphics capability, it’s difficult to come to a decision. Sony and Microsoft use such widely different hardware that comparing them abstractly is almost impossible. The PlayStation 3 contains an NVidia graphics system which, both NVidia and Sony claim, is more powerful than two GeForce 6800 GPU-s put together.

Microsoft, on the other hand, uses an ATI system custom-built for the Xbox 360. It uses something called the Unified Shader Architecture, which mixes up the vertex and pixel pipelines. This is what makes the comparison difficult. The 48 pipelines touted by Microsoft finds no answer in Sony’s marketing campaign, probably because Sony realizes they can’t adequately represent the fact that the number of pipelines isn’t the real issue here. The NVidia RSX core will most likely have no more than 24 of them, but here we’re really comparing apples to oranges. Only a head-to-head stress test can produce the final verdict in this case.

In terms of support for additional media and data storage, the Sony PS3 is again clearly in the lead. It has at least 6 USB ports, an SD slot, a memory stick slot, and even the option for adding a 2.5” removable hard drive. The Xbox, in contrast, has only two memory card slots and a few USB slots that are claimed to be able to accommodate sundry peripherals, including Apple’s iPod. However, it has the additional advantage of being able to access media from locally networked windows boxes.

Xbox supports dual-layer DVD-s which can hold at most 9 gigabytes of data, while Sony’s machine will support the company’s new Blu-Ray media format, which can cram in about 54 gigs into one disk.

Both the PS3 and Xbox 360 have an impressive line-up of games and game developers to their names. These include sequels of time-tested blockbusters like Unreal Tournament, Spiderman, Metal Gear Solid etc. for the Playstation, and Call of Duty, FIFA World Cup, NBA Live, Quake, Tiger Woods PGA Tour etc. for the Xbox.

So while the two contending consoles are equal to each other in most respects, Sony really does gain the lead in the hardware department, though not by too great a margin.

However, you have to set against that the fact that the Xbox is already out there, selling great, while the Playstation 3 isn’t scheduled to make a debut till later this year. So if you’re raring to go get the best nex-gen console out there, and have an wallet equal to your aspirations, are you going to wait for your treat? I know I couldn’t, if I were you.
