We were both thirteen years old and backpacking in Michigan without adults (times were different back then). Camping miles from the nearest road, in a single-wall pup tent, we tried not to move too much, because doing so resulted in a shower of icy crystals raining down on us - the frozen condensation from our own breath. When we got up that morning, the thermometer read ten or eleven degrees below zero.

We got out of the tent and everything was glittering with those same crystals, which only seem to form on the coldest days. Jim suggested that we should take off our coats, sweaters and shirts and shake them out. They get flattened by sleeping in them, and this would fluff them up, making them warmer. That was his theory. Soon we were standing there in the snow at ten below with our bare skin turning red.

Fortunately, we were able to dress again before losing the feeling in our fingers. Fluffing up the clothing did help it to trap more air and insulate better, so we warmed up quickly. Probably this would have been a better idea after we had the fire going, but it worked. Add it to your list of ways to stay warm when backpacking, but you might want to do it before you leave your tent (provided it is dry in there). What else can you do to stay warm?

Staying Warm While Backpacking - Six More Ways

1. Stay dry.

Always keep as dry as possible when there is a chance of getting cold. It is always surprising to me how often I see hikers walking right through streams without rolling up their jeans. Given how slowly jeans dry, this usually means being wet when the sun sets. Roll up those pants! Put on your rain pants when walking through dew-covered tall grass and bushes. Dry your wet socks by hanging them on your pack.

2. Have the right clothing.

The jeans mentioned above shouldn’t be part of most backpacking trips. Jeans are too difficult to dry. Good hiking pants made of some type of brushed nylon (nylon that feels soft and comfortable), dry fast. I have seen my pants dry in less than thirty minutes after a good soaking. If the weather calls for long underwear, use polypropylene or some similar material that will stay warm when wet and dry easily. The same goes for other clothing. Avoid cotton.

3. Dress in layers.

Layers of clothing trap more insulating air and keep you warmer. Having more layers rather than one thick coat also means you can more easily adjust for differing conditions. That is important to keep you from sweating. If you sweat too much, the wetness can cause you to get chilled when you stop exerting yourself. Dress in layers, then, and remove them as you warm up.

4. Eat and drink properly.

Hot liquids will warm you up - no surprise there. But many people do not realize that foods are not all equal in their ability to produce heat in our bodies. Fats actually produce heat as they are digested, which is part of the reason that whale blubber is eaten in arctic areas. Army survival courses teach soldiers to eat large chunks of butter to stay warn in winter conditions. For backpacking purposes, you can have olive oil on your pasta or eat oily foods like corn chips to get the same warming effect.

5. Learn how to make and place shelters.

A simple shelter of sticks covered with piles of dry leaves and grass can insulated you and save your life if you are caught out in the winter without a tent. Learning how to make a few of these simple shelters is smart planning for possible emergencies. But even if you have a tent with you, it matters where you set it up. It is normally colder the higher you go, but cold air also collects in the bottoms of valleys at night and into the morning. A level area somewhere in between is best. Try to find a place out of the wind as well.

6. Learn a few tricks for staying warm.

Apart from the basic principles of staying warm during winter backpacking, there are a lot of little tricks you can learn and use. Fully fluffing up a sleeping bag, for example, makes it more effective. Doing sit-ups in your bag before going to sleep gets you a warm start to the night. Some water bottles or canteens can be filled with hot water and kept in the bag with you (some bottles will distort if filled with boiling water). Keeping water bottles inside your clothing during strenuous hikes keeps it warmer, so later you won’t have to drink cold water, which can suck away some of your heat in the evening.

You are going on holiday and have heard about direct travel insurance. But why do you need it? Below are answers to commonly asked questions, including the type of coverage travel insurance direct includes.
Travel insurance is coverage for you when you are traveling away from home. Not all policies provide the same coverage and of course, prices can vary. Coverage varies amongst companies with different types of policies providing different types of coverage. You can get differing types depending on what your direct travel insurance needs are including travel insurance Australia if you are skiing down under.
What type of direct travel insurance coverage do you need?
The type of coverage you will need depends on where you plan on traveling. Medical costs vary tremendously in different countries. For example, if you have to be hospitalized while traveling in the United States, chances are the daily rates will be around $10 000 a day. If you need to be evacuated back home from another country, those costs will be unreachable for some people - potentially upwards of $100 000 or more. This will make the cost for travel insurance seem like pennies compared to the expense of having to be hospitalized or evacuated.
When you are researching the different policies and what is offered, look for coverage that includes emergency evacuation, coverage for someone to accompany you if you are traveling alone, unlimited personal liability and cover for pre-existing conditions.
You will also want to take the time to comb through the finer details of your chosen policy’s product disclosure booklet and to highlight any exclusions that may relate to your trip. Do this before signing your contract and making the final payment.
What other types of coverage would travel insurance include besides medical?
Direct travel insurance is not just for medical related problems that could arise during your holiday or business trip, it can also cover such things as cancellation of your trip, baggage, rental cars and delays. Below are some specifics to determine which travel insurance policy is right for you.

  • Cancellations: You suddenly discover that you are unable to go on a booked and paid for holiday and this is due to a serious illness of either yourself or a relative. If you have purchased direct travel insurance, you will most likely be able to recoup this cancellation.
  • Baggage: While obtaining travel insurance is one of the main reasons people obtain travel insurance, it is one of the only things that can replaced, while your health cannot., in the unlucky event that your luggage end up lost or stolen, you will be required to prove ownership of your items. If baggage cover is important to you, check whether you are covered for stolen luggage from a locked car or hotel room, what the limits are for coverage, and if your chosen policy reimburses for lost cash.
  • Rental Cars: Renting a car overseas can be quite expensive particularly if you are not aware of the excess amount and you happen to be involved in an accident. This is where direct travel insurance comes in handy - the expense should be covered by your policy.
  • Personal liability: When renting a car abroad, the rental car company you are with may offer coverage in case of an accident where someone is injured. If you have travel insurance, this portion of the policy may cover expenses if someone is injured. This cover often includes the legal expenses for accidents excluding car accidents. Ensure you know what the travel insurance will cover for personal liability in the event of an accident. If in doubt, ask a friend to help you comb through the finer details.
  • Delays: In the instance that your flight is delayed, (which can interrupt all other reservations you have made at your destination), travel insurance will help to reduce impact on your finances and cover these unexpected delays. Don’t assume that everything will be covered with your travel insurance …ensure you understand the fine print of the policy and what it for disruption to your travel plans. Also, check the level of excess and whether you can buy this out. Excess is the amount that you spend prior to a claim being paid out
  • In essence, protect yourself when investing in your next trip abroad and ensure both yourself and loved ones you leave behind have peace of mind that if there are mishaps, you are covered. Do your homework prior to purchasing a policy and understand exactly what it is you are covered for.
    Safe Travels!

You may not know this, but there is a lot of buried treasure out there. We’re not talking about pirate treasure, although there is undoubtedly still some of that to be found. This is about the cash and valuables that are buried all over this country. For example, billions of dollars of cash is unaccounted for in bank accounts - far more than what is in our pockets. Some of it is in underground.

Why is there so much buried treasure? Because people like to hide things. There is probably more goodies stashed out there than ever before, for the simple reason that there are more people around. It’s a matter of the numbers. But why would so much remain hidden and waiting for a treasure hunter to find it? That has a simple explanation too: those who buried it are gone.

People forget that they buried things, and move. Some are not able to get at their stash because they’re in prison for a crime - perhaps for life. The most common scenario, though is the saddest: The man or woman who put that treasure in the ground is also in the ground now. We humans die all the time with many untold secrets, and some of those secrets have to do with what we have hidden and where we have hidden it.

    Locations For Buried Treasure

It was common in the past, and probably still is common, to bury money and valuables under the edge of driveways, sidewalks and other cement or asphalt slabs. When you suspect such a stash, look for sagging asphalt. Cement won’t sag, but the loosening of the soil allows the softer asphalt to do so with time.

Look for areas that are out of sight of the road or the prying eyes of neighbors. People won’t bury a treasure in the front yard where they can be seen by everyone. Think about where could you dig a hole inconspicuously, and start digging, probing or scanning with your metal detector there.

The scenery may have changed over the years, though so look for evidence of that. Were some trees or bushes cut down? Are the next-door houses new? A location which is in the open now might have been secluded thirty years back.

It has always been common to bury things in gardens. A jar full of money or jewelry can be buried and dug up easily there because of the soft and loosened soil. Keep an eye out for evidence of old garden sites. Scan those areas with the metal detector. Though currency won’t give you signal by itself, it is usually in a jar or coffee can with a metal top.

As children we discovered it’s easy to forget where you buried a treasure after a year passes. This is why it’s common to bury things near easily-remembered “markers.” The classic criminal stash is buried near a sign along the road. There are many things which could be markers. Start with those before searching an open area where a burial spot could be easily forgotten.

Lumps or dips in the surface of a yard can indicate where something was buried. After a hole is filled and leveled off, the soil often settles a bit. A mound may be there if all the soil didn’t fit back in the hole. One thing you should know about this though, is that you might unearth a dead cat or dog by digging under the bumps and dips, so use the metal detector before digging up that buried treasure.

What kind of sleeping bag should you get? That depends on how you will use it. Of course, it also depends on what your budget is. So decide what you can spend, and then consider the following six questions before you go shopping.

    1. What is the coldest weather you will be camping in?

If your backpacking is limited to the summer months, you can probably get away with any sleeping bag rated down to 40 degrees Fahrenheit (4 degrees Celsius). Otherwise, consider your future plans and get a bag that will work at the coldest temperatures you expect to encounter. If it is too warm for summer use, you can always open it up like a blanket and lay it loosely over yourself so it won’t hold in so much heat. Another alternative is to buy one bag for winter trips and one for summer.

    2. What kinds of conditions will you be camping in?

The conditions you can expect will determine what fill is best for you. If you will always be backpacking in the northwest, and so possibly getting wet most of the time, you don’t want down. It loses most of its insulating ability when wet. A good synthetic fill is better. On the other hand, if you will be camping most of the time in the desert southwest, a down sleeping bag is the lightest (and most compressible) option available. My own down bag weighs just 17 ounces, stuffs into a bread bag, and has kept me warm to below freezing. If you are careful you can keep any bag dry, but it is tough in some conditions, so ask yourself where you’ll be going, and how good you are at staying dry.

    3. How claustrophobic are you?

Some people really can’t get comfortable in a mummy bag. They need room to move around. If you aren’t sure how you feel about this, there is one way to find out: get in those bags. See if you feel good in a snug mummy. Borrow one and spend a night in it if you have to. A good mummy is the warmest sleeping bag you can get for the weight, but semi-rectangular may be better for comfort.

    4. How big are you?

If you are tall, be sure you can fit comfortably in that sleeping bag with the hood closed. What if you are too big for a tight mummy bag? Try a rectangular or semi-rectangular one.

    5. How heavy is the sleeping bag?

Even if you are not into ultralight backpacking, there is no reason to carry too much weight if it isn’t necessary. A decent summer sleeping bag shouldn’t weigh more than about three pounds. To get down to the weight of my down bag (17 ounces) you’ll have to spend more. A winter bag will be heavier because of the additional filling, but in any case, compare the various bags according to their temperature ratings and total weight (with the stuff sack if you’ll be using it).

    6. How packable is it?

No filling invented yet is as compressible as down. For that reason, if you use a small backpack, you may want to consider a down sleeping bag. Some synthetics can be packed in compression sacks to reduce their volume, but this can eventually damage the filling and so reduce the bags insulating ability. Also, a compression sack adds more weight to your load. It is probably better to simply put a large synthetic-fill bag on the outside of the pack.

There are certainly other specific questions to ask about sleeping bags as you look at them. A zipper that opens at the bottom is nice for those with hot feet. A water-resistant shell can keep dripping tent condensation from wetting the filling of the sleeping bag, or allow dew to be shaken off in the morning if camping in the open. There are many other features you might find too, but start with the six questions above to quickly narrow down the options.

Buying a holiday villa at the time seemed like a good idea; Lots of sun, good food, cheap flights and best of all no Christmas with the mother-in-law. We spent several months on the internet researching the market and narrowing down which part of the world we wanted our dream holiday villa in. Pretty quickly all of the family agreed that it had to be Florida but not a typical holiday villa that we usually stayed in.

Two weeks later, we had booked flights to Florida and we decided to make the holiday home search a holiday as well. We were armed with a list of villas and communities that we wanted to look at, in and around the Orlando area. Orlando was the preferred choice due to it having good weather all year round, a large international airport and all of the Theme Parks.

The Theme Parks were essential as they would always provide visitor numbers to Orlando and in theory keep up the price of the properties. The kids thought that they were essential for the rides! We based ourselves south of Orlando in a rental home in a small gated community. It was maybe a little too far out but our enthusiasm for the task ahead quickly solved that problem.

Armed with our dream wish list and the list of communities that we had already selected from the internet, we began our holiday villa search. The first problem that we encountered was that all of the holiday villas that we were looking at looked and felt the same. It was soon obvious that there were plenty of houses to choose from but they were all ‘much of a much’ feeling. We soon realized that a standard holiday villa with swimming pool would be great for a few weeks but that after a while the kids would get bored and then the moaning and bickering would start.

We then altered our priorities and put a holiday home in a community lived in by Americans as our top priority. The boys are keen golfers and they wanted a house on a golf course. My youngest daughter wanted plenty of swimming pools and slides and my wife wanted good restaurants. I wanted peace and quiet both from a surrounding point of view and also a non feuding family point of view! We were then quickly able to eliminate most of the properties from our wish list and were left with only more place to look it.

The place in question was called Reunion. It was thirty minutes away from Orlando International Airport, a few minutes away form Disney and all the other theme parks and just off the I4. So far so good, as it ticked all of the first lot of boxes. When we drove into the site we had to enter through a manned gate house with a beautiful landscaped area around it with amazing flowers. Yet another box ticked as this would provide security for the children and give us peace of mind that the property would be safe when we were back in the U.K.

We soon discovered that the community had two golf courses and that a third one was nearing completion. This totally swung it for the boys who were immediately hooked. Mike, the sales guy, then took us up to the Water Park that was nearing completion. That was my daughter hooked and when he said that they would soon be opening a riding stables she was totally adamant that this was the place for her. My wife loved the Club House and the beautiful swimming pool at Seven Eagles.

It was now Mike’s turn to convince me and he did not let me down. The first house that Mike showed us we all fell in love with. It had five bedrooms, balcony and its own swimming pool. Forty five minutes later I had filled in all of the paper work and left a deposit.

We then returned to the U.K and transferred the funds over completing on the house in a matter of weeks. Job done. Everybody happy. It went like clockwork and the best advice that I can give to anybody considering buying a holiday home for a villa holiday abroad is to do all of your research before you go there and do not compromise.

Portugal is regarded as one of the oldest countries in Western Europe and is an extremely popular tourist destination for villa holidays. It is a country full of magnificent old churches, rambling historic castles and beautiful monuments. These are equally matched by the new era of buildings and technologies that have sprung up in recent years fuelled by a buoyant expanding economy.

Portugal is in the fortunate position of having a culture and strong regional traditions that have developed over many centuries. This has led to a strong and varied type of architecture leading to the Portuguese claiming that they have the best examples of ancient architecture in the whole of Europe. Mixing this together with Portugal’s excellent climate helps make Portugal one of Europe’s leading tourist destinations.

Lisbon is internationally recognized as one of Western Europe’s most unspoiled cities. Many tourists also succumb to the temptation of visiting the delightful Sinatra and Cassias which are both easily accessible from Lisbon. While travelling around Portugal, the discerning tourist cannot fail to be impressed by the numerous small villages. These radiate a feeling of peace and tranquillity often alien to the visiting tourist’s homeland. Many of these villages are hidden inside the rambling walls of old castles and the one thing that they all have in common is their stunning geographical locations.

The paradise island of Madeira set just off the Atlantic draws in many tourists. They are attracted there by the abundance of local floral creating fantastic views set against the magnificent coastlines and mountainous regions. Many tourists simply come to Portugal for a relaxing villa holiday and in search of sun and sea. For those tourists looking to top up their suntans the region of Algarve fits the bill. It is an area of long clean sandy beaches stretching out to some of the cleanest water in Europe.

The area is recognized worldwide for its crystal clear waters that are mystically surrounded by dramatic cliffs. To top it off, the Algarve is regarded to have the best all round weather. Due to the superb weather conditions Portugal has many events that keeps the tourists coming back to see year after year. One such event held every October is the Angra do Heroismo International Jazz Festival. Over the years this event has grown to such an extent that it is now regarded as one of the best jazz festivals in Europe.

Not to be outdone, the central area of Portugal holds its own Festival of The Estuary every year in late July, early August. During this festival the city of Aveiro bursts into life and the flocking tourists turn it into a city of colour and joy. For those tourists looking for a more modern culture, there is an International Show Jumping competition held each July in Cascais. This internationally recognized event brings together some of the best horses and riders from around the world. Golf fans are not left out either.

As well as having some of the best golf courses in Europe and a climate to match, Portugal hosts the Portugal Open each year. It is no wonder that Portugal has turned into one of the top holiday destinations for villa holidays in Europe. A combination of climate, culture and architecture have help provide an ideal villa holiday location enjoyed by my tourists year after year.
